An unusual George II Scottish silver Birth Spoon.
A George II Scottish silver Birth spoon, maker’s mark only of James Mitchell, Edinburgh, circa 1747. The top of the spoon is engraved with a contemporary inscription: ‘Gifted by Sr John Home of Manderston to his beloved Grand Son John Home born at Coldingham 10th of July 1747.’
This spoon has a very dented bowl, which could doubtless be debruised by a silversmith, but which seems more appropriately left as a testimony to the history of a child’s spoon.
The stem is good with minor wear. The bowl is extensively bruised.
Length – 16 cm.; Width 2.90 cm.; Weight – 29 gms.
